National Symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC IX)

15-17 March 2018

The Ninth National symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC – IX) jointly organized by Indian Society for Spices (ISS), Kozhikode and School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD), Nagaland University, Medziphema, Nagaland with the theme “Spices for Doubling Farmers Income” was held during 15-17 March 2018 at SASRD, Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, Nagaland.

The symposium was inaugurated by Shri. Padmanaba Balakrishna Achariya, Hon’ble Governor of Nagaland. Prof. Pardeshi Lal, Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University was the Guest of Honour. During the symposium, Dr. S.P. Ghosh, Former DDG (Hort.), ICAR, New Delhi, Prof. T. Lanusosang, Pro-Vice Chancellor, NU, SASRD, Medziphema, Dr. V.A. Parthasarathy, Former Director, ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode, Dr. K. Nirmal Babu, Director and Project Coordinator (Spices), ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode, Dr. M. Anandaraj, Former Director, ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode and Prof. V.B. Singh, President, HSNEI, Medziphema, Nagaland were felicitated. On the occasion, a Souvenir of the Symposium, a book on Sustainable Horticulture and folders on cultivation practices of spices published by the Department of Horticulture and SASRD, Nagaland University were released. This was followed by the ISS award ceremony.

The symposium witnessed the convergence of 86 officials representing various organizations, 65 students, more than 130 farmers and 75 Buyers/Growers/Exhibitors besides scientists representing ICAR and different State Agricultural Universities. The symposium had six technical sessions on various themes like, Status of spice industry in India with special reference to North East Region (NER); Crop improvement and biotechnology; Nutrient, soil, water and plant health management; Climate resilience in spice crops production; Technology - led organic production of spices and safe foods and Post harvest management, value addition and marketing of spices besides the plenary, separate session on developing road map for spice industry in NER region, farmer’s interactive sessions, business meet (B2B) and exhibitions during which the farmers representing different North Eastern states and other parts of India, entrepreneurs as well as industrial personnel participated.

National Symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC VIII)

16-18 December 2015

The Eighth National symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC – VIII) jointly organized by Indian Society for Spices, Kozhikode and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore with the theme “Towards 2050- Strategies for sustainable Spices Production” was held during 16-18 December 2015 at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The symposium was inaugurated by Dr. N. K. Krishna Kumar, Deputy Director General (Hort. Science), ICAR, New Delhi. Dr. K. Ramasamy, Vice - Chancellor, TNAU presided over the inaugural function. The key note address was delivered by Professor R.R. Hanchinal, Chairperson, PPV&FRA, New Delhi. Dr. M. Anandaraj, Director, ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode, Dr. V.A. Parthasarathy, Former Director , ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode, Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Director, ICAR-DMAPR, Anand, Gujarat, Dr. S. Mariappan, Dean (Hort.), HC&RI, TNAU, Coimbatore and Dr. Homey Cherian, Director, DASD, Kozhikode felicitated the symposium and cherished the efforts of the organizers. This was followed by the ISS award ceremony. On the occasion, a Souvenir of the Symposium and Nilavembu powder, a TNAU product were released. The symposium was attended by over 250 delegates including researchers, officials and progressive farmers across the country. The symposium after two days deliberations formulated strategies for sustainable spices production by giving thrust on conservation of genetic resources, crop improvement, secondary agriculture, bio risk management, mechanization, eco-spices etc. so as to realize the set goals.

Symposium on Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (SYMSAC VII)

27-29 November 2013

Indian Society for Spices (ISS) in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode; ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru; Directorate of Arecanut & Spices Development, Kozhikode and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi organized SYMSAC VII: Post-harvest Processing of Spices and Fruit Crops during 27-29 November 2013 at Hotel Crystal Court, Madikeri, Karnataka. Dr. M. Anandaraj, President, ISS & Director, IISR, Kozhikode welcomed the gathering. Dr. V.S. Korikanthimath, former Director, ICAR Research Complex for Goa inaugurated the Symposium. Dr. M.M. Mustaffa, Director, ICAR-National Research Centre on Banana, Tiruchirappalli presided over the function. Dr. M.N. Venugopal, former Head, CRC (Appangala), IISR inaugurated the exhibition. Dr. John Zachariah, General Convener of the Symposium, IISR proposed vote of thanks. During the inaugural session many awards viz., Dr. J.S. Pruthi Award, Dr. V.S. Korikanthimath award, Sugandhasree best farmer award and ISS Fellow awards were presented. Inaugural session was followed by four technical sessions viz., tree spices research, production technologies, post harvest losses and developmental programmes. Many recommendations including mechanization, packaging, production technologies, region specific good agricultural practices, post harvest management, underutilized and minor fruits, quality testing of inputs etc. emerged during the discussions.

The Sixth National symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC – VI) jointly organized by Indian Society for Spices (ISS), University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad, Karnataka and Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Kozhikode in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi was held at University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad, Karnataka during 08-10 December 2011 with the theme ‘Exploiting Spices Production Potential of the Deccan Region’.

National Symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC-V)

30-31 October 2009

Indian Society for Spices (ISS) in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Kozhikode and Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Nagaland organized Fifth National Symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC V) at CIH, Medziphema, Nagaland during 30-31 October 2009. The theme area of the seminar was ‘Harnessing the potential of North Eastern States for Spices Production through Technological Interventions’. The symposium was inaugurated by Dr. Chumben Murry, Minister of Agriculture, Nagaland and presided over by Alemtemshi Jamir, Additional Chief Secretary, Development Commissioner & Agriculture Production Commissioner, Nagaland. More than 150 delegates including Scientists, officials from Department of Agriculture/Horticulture, farmers and entrepreneurs attended the symposium.

National Symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC-IV)

25-26 November 2007

The National Symposium on Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC IV) with focus on threats and solutions to spices and aromatic crops industry was held from 25-26 November 2007 at Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar. The symposium was inaugurated by the His Excellency the Hon’ble Governor of Orissa Shri Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare on 25th November. Other dignitaries present were Dr. HP. Singh (DDG-Hort), Prof. D.P. Ray (VC, OUAT), Dr D. Naik (Dean-Research, OUAT), Directors from various ICAR institutes, farmers representatives, NGOs, officials from Spices Board and State Agricultural Universities.

The Third National symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC – III) organized by Indian Society for Spices (ISS) in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi was held at Lalbagh, Bengaluru during 08-10 November 2006 with the theme ‘Crop and Product Diversification’.

The Second National symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops (SYMSAC – II) jointly organized by Indian Society for Spices (ISS) and National Research Centre for Onion and Garlic, Rajgurunagar, Pune in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi was held at National Research Centre for Onion and Garlic, Rajgurunagar, Pune during 25-27 November 2005 with the theme ‘Current Trends in Onion, Garlic, Chilli and Seed Spices’.
